A transbian is a trans woman who is a lesbian. The word is a compression of trans and lesbian, and it exists because the combination needed a name of its own.
It came from within the community, not from outside it, and it carries affection. It is used most in trans lesbian spaces, in bios, and among friends. That origin is why it reads warmly from someone who is one and awkwardly from someone who is not.
The reason it needed a word is that trans lesbians sit in a particular position. They are excluded by people who claim lesbian means being a woman in a specific way, and they meet chasers who read them as a category rather than as women. Neither trans woman nor lesbian on its own names that experience.
It is not a separate orientation. A transbian is a lesbian, in the ordinary sense of a woman attracted to women, and the trans part describes her rather than her attraction. Treating it as a third thing beside lesbian is the mistake the word is most vulnerable to.

Not every trans lesbian likes the term. Some find it cutesy, some prefer simply lesbian and object to a qualifier they never asked for, and some feel it separates them from lesbian community rather than placing them in it. It is a word to accept when offered, not to hand out.
Transbian is not a different orientation from lesbian
The word looks like it might name a third category, and it does not. A transbian is a lesbian. The trans is a fact about her, in the same way that any other fact about a lesbian does not create a new orientation. Reading it as a subcategory is precisely how trans lesbians end up positioned as adjacent to lesbian community rather than inside it.
The second misuse comes from outside. Cis men use the word as a search term and as an opening line, treating it as a genre rather than as a description of women. That is a large part of why some trans lesbians have stopped using it in public profiles.
