Sapphic

Sapphic describes women, and people close to womanhood, who are attracted to women. It covers lesbians, bisexual and pansexual women, and many nonbinary people whose relationship to womanhood is real but not simple.

The word comes from Sappho, a poet on the island of Lesbos in the seventh century BC, whose surviving fragments are mostly addressed to women. Lesbian comes from the same place by a different route.

Its usefulness is that it is a wide word in a place where the wide word was missing. Lesbian is specific and some people it would describe do not want it, either because they are bisexual or because their own gender does not sit still enough for it. Sapphic holds all of that without asking anyone to settle anything first.

Trans women are sapphic on exactly the same terms as anyone else, and nonbinary people who are read into or out of womanhood depending on the day are too. This is not a modern addition to the word: it is why many people reached for it.

Its counterpart is achillean, for men and adjacent people attracted to men.

Sapphic is not a softer word for lesbian

It is often treated as a more decorative synonym, which loses what it does. Lesbian names an orientation and, for most people who use it, a gender. Sapphic names a direction of attraction and leaves the speaker's own gender open.

That difference is the reason the word gets used. Someone who is bisexual, or whose gender is still moving, or who is a woman in a way that gets argued about, can say sapphic without being asked to defend a second claim at the same time.
