Gender expression
How someone presents their gender outwardly. Not the same as what their gender is.
Gender expression is the outward part: clothes, hair, voice, posture, name, the way someone occupies a room. It is what other people can actually see, and it is the thing they use to guess, usually wrongly, at gender identity.
The separation between expression and identity is the whole point of having the term. A man in a dress is a man in a dress. A woman with short hair and no makeup is a woman. Expression is evidence of nothing except itself.
It is also the part that is negotiated with the outside world rather than felt. Most people adjust their expression by room: at work, at home, on a bad street at night. For trans people those adjustments carry consequences that make the word less abstract than it sounds.
It is usually taught alongside three others: gender identity, meaning who you are; sex assigned at birth, meaning what someone wrote down; and orientation, meaning who you are drawn to. All four are independent, and knowing one tells you very little about the rest.
Androgynous, masculine, feminine and everything between are descriptions of expression, and none of them is a claim about identity.
Gender expression is not evidence of gender identity
It is treated as a test constantly: someone who does not present the way their stated gender is expected to present gets their gender questioned. That is exactly the inference the term exists to block.
It also punishes people twice. Trans people who cannot or do not want to present a certain way are told they are not really trans, and cis people who present unexpectedly are told they must be.
