Closeted

Closeted describes not being out about being trans, or about anything else. The image is of a closed door, and the usual assumption attached to it is of hiding, which is often wrong.
For trans people the reasons are frequently external: a job, a family, a country, a landlord, a custody arrangement, an immigration case. Someone in that position is making a calculation rather than a confession they are unwilling to make.
It differs from being stealth, which describes someone who has transitioned and does not disclose. Closeted usually describes someone who has not been able to start, and the two carry different weight.
Being closeted is often a calculation, not shame
The image of a closed door implies concealment for its own sake, and the advice that follows is usually to open it.
For many people the door is held shut by a job, a family or a country. Advice to come out that does not address those is advice to take a risk someone else has not priced.
