Where it comes from

The Progress Pride flag was designed in 2018 by Daniel Quasar, a non-binary designer. It builds on the six-stripe rainbow flag and on a 2017 Philadelphia version that had added black and brown stripes.

The 2017 Philadelphia flag

In June 2017 the City of Philadelphia raised a version of the rainbow flag with a black and a brown stripe added at the top, to recognise LGBTQ+ people of colour. It was designed by the agency Tierney for the city's Office of LGBT Affairs, then led by AJ Hikes, for a campaign called More Color More Pride, after documented racism in the city's gay district.

It drew criticism, most of it from white gay men according to Hikes, and was defended as an addition to the rainbow rather than a replacement. The Progress Pride flag took up its black and brown the following year.

Why a chevron

Quasar placed the added colours in an arrow shape pointing right, along the hoist edge. The arrow suggests forward movement, and its position at the edge suggests that progress is still needed.

The intersex-inclusive version

In 2021 Valentino Vecchietti updated the design to include intersex people, adding a yellow triangle with a purple circle, the elements of the intersex flag, at the point of the chevron.

Seeing it on a door or a profile

A Progress Pride flag in a shop window, a clinic or a bio is usually a deliberate choice of the more inclusive design. It is a reasonable signal that the person or place has thought about trans people and people of colour, not a guarantee, and it is fair to judge them by what they do next.
