Where it comes from

The androgyne flag was first posted on Tumblr in 2011 by a user called saveferris, with no explanation beyond its name. Many guides date it to July 2014, which is actually the date of a well-known repost.

What the colours mean

The meanings were added by that 2014 repost, which introduced them as what the colours were supposed to mean. They are the community's reading, not the original poster's.

Vertical, not horizontal

The three colours are the same family as the bisexual flag's, which is why the vertical layout matters: it is what tells the two apart.

What androgyne means

Androgyne is a gender that combines masculine and feminine, or sits between them. It describes identity, not appearance: androgynous describes a look, and an androgyne person can present in any way.
