Transphobia

Transphobia is hostility toward trans people. It covers a wide range, from a joke to a refusal of care to legislation, and the word is doing useful work only when it is specific about which.
Most of it is not shouted. It is the pause before a pronoun, the medical appointment that goes elsewhere, the flat that was taken already, the colleague who keeps using the old name and apologising each time. This is the part that accumulates, and it is why trans people often describe exhaustion rather than fear.
The suffix is misleading, as it is in homophobia. It names a phobia, and almost none of this is fear in a clinical sense. Prejudice, contempt and policy are closer to what the word actually covers.
It is not a synonym for disagreement. Someone who thinks a particular policy is wrong is not automatically transphobic, and treating the word as a general-purpose accusation blunts it exactly when it is needed for something real.
Transmisogyny names the specific form aimed at trans women, where transphobia and misogyny compound, and transandrophobia names the form aimed at trans men. Both are worth naming separately because they do not behave the same way.
Transphobia is rarely a phobia
The word names a fear, and that framing lets people off. Someone who refuses to rent to a trans tenant is not experiencing a panic response; they are making a decision. Prejudice and policy are the accurate descriptions.
It also matters for what follows. A fear invites reassurance. A decision invites consequences, and most of what trans people encounter is the second kind.
