Gendervoid

Feeling the absence of a gender as an absence, rather than a neutral fact.

Gendervoid describes having no gender and experiencing that as an absence: a space where something might have been. It sits close to agender and genderless, and what separates it is the felt quality rather than the fact.

Agender and genderless are usually described as unremarkable. Gendervoid is the word for people who do notice the gap, and for whom it is sometimes a loss and sometimes simply a presence of nothing.

It is not a diagnosis and not a complaint. It is a description offered by people who found that the neutral words did not match what they actually experience.

Gendervoid is not a symptom

Because it describes an absence that is felt, it gets read as a sign of something wrong. The people using it are describing their gender, not their mental health.

It is also not a temporary state on the way to finding a gender. For most people who use it, the void is the answer.

Saying it well

Say this

  • I am gendervoid.
  • There is a gap, and I notice it.
  • Gendervoid rather than agender: I feel the absence.
  • Sometimes it is a loss, sometimes it is just there.

Not this

  • That sounds like depression
  • So you need to find your gender
  • That is just agender
  • You should see someone about that

No. It is a description of gender, not of wellbeing.
