Genderfluid means a gender that changes over time. Not uncertainty about which one it is, but a gender that genuinely moves, and settles differently on different days.
The movement varies enormously between people. Some shift over hours, some over months. Some move between man and woman, others between one gender and none, others across ground that has no established names. There is no standard route and no standard speed.
It is a gender in its own right, not the absence of one. A genderfluid person is not failing to have a stable answer. Their answer is that it is not stable, which is as complete a reply as any fixed one.
Presentation does not have to follow. Some genderfluid people change how they dress, speak and carry themselves as the gender moves. Many keep one presentation permanently, because changing daily is exhausting, unsafe, or simply not what they want. The gender can move while the appearance stays put.
It sits under the nonbinary umbrella, and under the trans umbrella too for most people who use it. Someone whose gender leaves the one they were assigned, even part of the time, is not cis in the ordinary sense of the word.
Pronouns are the practical difficulty. Some genderfluid people change pronouns with the gender and appreciate being asked. Many settle on they/them or on a set like he/they precisely so that nobody has to check, and being asked repeatedly becomes its own burden.
Genderfluid is not indecision, and it is not a phase
The most common response is to hear a gender that changes as a gender not yet chosen. They are different claims. A genderfluid person is reporting an observation about how their gender behaves, made over years. Being told to make up their mind treats a description as a delay.
The second misreading is that genderfluid means presenting differently every day. Plenty of genderfluid people look exactly the same all week. What moves is internal, and expecting a visible performance of it turns a private experience into something that has to be proved.
