Can I date while I'm still working out my gender?

Yes. You do not need a settled answer to be worth dating, and waiting for one costs years.

The idea that you should sort yourself out first and date afterwards sounds sensible and is mostly a way of postponing your life. Very few people arrive at dating fully resolved about anything.

Nothing here covers medical questions. We are a dating platform with no standing to answer those, and we would rather say so than guess. For anything about your health or your care, talk to a clinician you trust.

You are allowed to not know

Questioning is a real position, not a waiting room. You can hold it for years, and plenty of people do while having perfectly good relationships.

You do not owe anyone a label, a timeline, or a guarantee that you will feel the same in two years. Nobody dating anybody has that guarantee.

How much to say

Enough that the person can meet you, not so much that you are narrating a process to a stranger. "I'm working some things out about my gender" is a complete disclosure for a third date.

If someone treats that as a problem to be solved, or starts suggesting what you probably are, that is information about them. You did not ask for a diagnosis and they are not qualified to give one.

Pronouns while you are unsure

You can try things. Ask to be called something for a week and see how it sits. Change it back if it does not fit — that is not a failure, it is the actual method, and it is how most people find out.

Some people use different pronouns in different rooms while they work it out. That is common and it is not dishonest. If a partner cannot handle the inconsistency, better to find out now.

If things change mid-relationship

Say it early rather than perfectly. A partner who finds out that you have been sitting on something for a year usually minds the year more than the thing.

Give them room to be surprised. Surprise is not rejection, and the first forty-eight hours are a bad sample. What matters is where they are a month later.

Some relationships do not survive it. That is a real loss and it is not evidence that you were wrong about yourself.

Where to date while you are here

Trans and queer spaces tend to be easier, because nobody needs the concept explained. You do not have to have arrived anywhere to be welcome in them, and words like genderqueer, non-binary and genderfluid exist precisely because the answer is not always one of two things.

Our glossary is there for the vocabulary. Use whatever fits and drop whatever does not.
