Gender envy

Wanting to look or be like someone, because of their gender rather than despite it.

Gender envy is the feeling of looking at someone and wanting what they have, where the thing you want is their gender or how they inhabit it. A jawline, a voice, a way of standing, the ease of being read correctly without effort.

It is not jealousy in the ordinary sense, and the word envy is doing it a disservice. There is usually no resentment in it. What people describe is closer to recognition arriving in the wrong order: seeing something and realising you wanted it before you had a word for wanting it.

For many people it is the first clear signal. Long before a decision about transition, there is a character in a film, a stranger on a train, a musician, and a feeling that does not fit under admiration. Gender envy names that feeling, which is most of its usefulness.

It attaches to unlikely people. Fictional characters and animated ones feature heavily, because they are designed rather than born and often exaggerate exactly the feature the person is looking for.

It is not a test and not evidence. Cis people have it too, and plenty of trans people never do. It is one signal among many, and its absence proves nothing.

Gender envy is not attraction

The two get mixed up constantly, and the confusion runs in both directions. People read gender envy as a crush they are in denial about, and people read a crush as gender envy because that is the safer explanation.

The rough test people use is what you want to do with the feeling: be them, or be with them. It is not a perfect test, and plenty of people feel both about the same person, which is allowed.

Saying it well

Say this

  • I have gender envy for him.
  • That is gender envy, not a crush.
  • Gender envy: I want to look like that, not date that.
  • He gives me gender envy and I could not have told you why at fifteen.

Not this

  • So you just fancy them
  • That is jealousy
  • If you have gender envy you must be trans
  • Everyone feels that

Questions people actually ask

What is gender envy?

Wanting to look or be like someone because of their gender or how they inhabit it, rather than being attracted to them.

Is gender envy the same as attraction?

No, though they are easily confused. The rough distinction is wanting to be someone rather than wanting to be with them.

Does gender envy mean I am trans?

Not on its own. Cis people feel it too, and many trans people never do. It is one signal, not a test.

Why do fictional characters cause gender envy?

Because they are designed rather than born, and often exaggerate exactly the feature someone is looking for.

What is the opposite of gender envy?

Gender euphoria is the closest counterpart: the feeling when something about your own gender lands right.
