Abrosexual
An orientation that changes over time.
Abrosexual describes an orientation that changes. Someone might be bisexual for a stretch, then find themselves gay, then asexual, with the shifts arriving on their own schedule rather than being chosen.
The changes can take days or years, and they do not follow a pattern that anyone can predict, including the person they happen to. That unpredictability is the hard part, and the reason the word matters: without it, each shift reads as having been wrong before.
It is the orientation counterpart of genderfluid. Abroromantic is the same thing for romantic orientation, and the two can move independently.
The obvious question is how to date on a shifting orientation. The honest answer people give is that the relationships tend to survive on the person rather than the category, which is also true of a lot of relationships that are not abrosexual.
Abrosexual is not having been wrong before
Each shift invites the reading that the previous label was a mistake, which turns a life into a series of corrections.
The word exists precisely to say the opposite: each was accurate at the time, and the movement is the orientation rather than a failure of it.
Saying it well
Say this
- I am abrosexual.
- It moves, and I do not steer it.
- Abrosexual, so the label depends when you ask.
- Right now, gay. Ask me next year.
Not this
- So you are just confused
- Pick one and commit
- You were lying before, then
- That is not how orientation works
