Pansexual
Attraction to people regardless of gender, where gender is not what decides it.
Pansexual means being attracted to people without gender being the thing that determines the attraction. Someone pansexual can be drawn to women, men, nonbinary people and anyone else, and their gender is not the filter the attraction passes through.
The usual shorthand is that pansexual people are attracted to the person rather than the gender. That is close enough to be useful, though most pansexual people would say gender is not invisible to them, just not decisive. They notice it the way they notice someone's height or accent: it is there, it is part of the person, and it is not the reason.
This is where it separates from bisexual, and the separation is smaller than arguments about it suggest. Bisexual describes attraction to more than one gender and says nothing about whether gender matters. Many bisexual people would describe their attraction exactly as a pansexual person does. The two words overlap heavily and plenty of people use both about themselves depending on who is asking.
Where it separates more cleanly is from omnisexual, which describes attraction to all genders with gender staying visible and relevant. Pansexual is gender-blind, omnisexual is gender-aware. Neither is wider than the other.
For trans people the word carries a particular weight, because it is one of the few orientation words that does not require you to settle your own gender first in order to use it.
Pansexual is not bisexual with better manners
The two words are often set against each other, with pansexual cast as the more inclusive one and bisexual as the outdated one that excludes nonbinary people. That framing is wrong on the facts: bisexual has meant attraction to more than one gender for decades, and bisexual communities have included nonbinary people throughout.
The honest difference is smaller and more interesting. Bisexual describes the range of the attraction. Pansexual describes the role gender plays inside it. Those are two different questions, which is why the same person can answer yes to both, and why choosing between them is usually about which conversation you want to have rather than which one is true.
