Microlabel
A precise identity word covering a narrow experience, usually inside a broader one.
A microlabel is a narrow identity term sitting inside a wider one. Demisexual inside asexual, genderfae inside genderfluid, transbian inside both trans and lesbian. The word describes the scope of a term rather than its validity.
They exist because the broad words leave out the specifics people keep having to explain. Someone who says they are nonbinary will be asked follow-up questions; someone who says genderflux has answered several of them in advance.
The standard complaint is that there are too many and that they fragment things. Both halves are worth taking seriously and neither is fatal: most people use one or two, the rest sit unused in a glossary, and a word nobody needs simply stops being said.
The practical rule most people land on is to use the broad word with strangers and the precise one where it saves a conversation. That is not a compromise, it is how vocabulary normally works.
A microlabel is not a smaller claim
The prefix suggests something minor or provisional. It refers to the width of the term, not to how strongly anyone holds it.
The broad word and the precise one are also not in competition. Most people use both, in different rooms, exactly as they would with any other vocabulary.
