Gender binary
The system that sorts everyone into man or woman, and nothing else.
The gender binary is the system that divides everyone into exactly two categories, man and woman, treats them as opposites, and assigns one at birth on the basis of anatomy. It is a framework rather than a fact, and it is not universal: several cultures have recognised more than two for centuries.
It does two things at once, and only the first is usually noticed. It states that there are two options, and it states that the one assigned to you at birth is permanent. Trans people run into the second half; nonbinary people run into the first.
Nonbinary is the word for being outside it. Binary trans people are inside it and moved across: a trans man is a man, a binary category, and nothing about his gender challenges the system except the assumption that it was fixed at birth.
Dismantling it is not the aim most people have. The ordinary aim is that it stop being enforced on people it does not fit, which is a smaller and more achievable thing.
Being binary trans is not a failure to be radical
Binary trans people are sometimes accused of propping up the system by fitting into it. That asks people to hold a political position with their own gender, which nobody else is asked to do.
A trans man is a man. That is a description, not a strategy, and it is not up for negotiation on the grounds that a different answer would be more interesting.
