Deminonbinary
Partly nonbinary, and partly something else or nothing.
Deminonbinary describes a partial connection to being nonbinary. It works the same way as demigirl and demiboy: the connection is real and it is not the whole picture.
The remainder can be a binary gender, another nonbinary gender, or nothing at all. Someone deminonbinary might be partly nonbinary and partly a woman, or partly nonbinary and partly agender.
It is sometimes abbreviated demi-nb or demienby. All three appear in introductions and mean the same thing.
Like the other demi- genders, the prefix means partial rather than half, and there is no proportion to calculate.
Deminonbinary is not being half-committed to nonbinary
Because nonbinary is already read as a middle position, adding demi to it is heard as hedging on a hedge.
Nonbinary is a gender, not a midpoint, and a partial connection to it works exactly as a partial connection to any other gender does.
Saying it well
Say this
- I am deminonbinary.
- Partly nonbinary, partly a woman.
- Demi-nb, if you want it shorter.
- Partial, not fifty per cent.
Not this
- So you are nonbinary or not
- That is too fine a distinction
- Pick a side
- Nonbinary is already the in-between one
