What are good first date ideas?

Short, public, cheap, and easy to leave, with something to look at besides each other.

A good first date is not impressive. It lets you both relax enough to find out whether you like each other, and lets either of you leave without a scene. For trans and non-binary people, add two tests: nobody is on display, and nobody faces a gendered check they did not choose. First date safety covers precautions; this page is the plan.

Walk and talk

A loop of a park or a riverside with a coffee to go. Side by side, nobody has to hold eye contact, and the end of the loop is a natural goodbye.

A market on a weekend morning, where browsing gives you something to point at.

A botanical garden, greenhouse or city farm: daytime, unhurried, full of things to ask about.

A viewpoint with a bench at the top, somewhere you can each reach and leave on your own.

Something to look at together

A small gallery, or one room of a big museum. Agree that an hour is plenty.

A bookshop, where each of you picks a book for the other under a small budget.

A record shop or secondhand shop, where taste turns into conversation fast.

A daytime event at a queer bookshop or community space: a zine fair, a craft afternoon, a reading.

Cheap food and drink

Coffee somewhere with space between tables, so you are not performing for the next table.

A bakery crawl: three places, one thing split at each.

A picnic in a busy park, each bringing one thing so nobody hosts.

Street food, or an ice cream and a bench. Over in half an hour if it needs to be.

Doing something light

A board game cafe, where the game carries the first twenty minutes.

Mini golf, an arcade or bowling: silly enough that nobody is trying to look good.

A pottery painting cafe, where busy hands make silences comfortable.

A quiz as a team of two, somewhere quiet enough to hear each other.

Before you meet in person

A video call date: watch the same short film, cook the same simple recipe on screen, or play a free online game together. It counts.

What to skip the first time

Anything that means using a gendered changing room. If the pool, sauna or climbing wall splits people at the door, save it for later.

A venue that checks ID at the door, if your ID does not match you. Nobody should be reading your gender marker in front of someone you met an hour ago.

Activities that sort people by gender: a dance class pairing men with women, a "ladies' night", teams split into boys and girls.

Anything you cannot walk out of: a boat trip, a tasting menu, a drive somewhere remote. Leaving a bad date depends on the exit being yours.

Somewhere so loud you have to shout, and either of your homes.

Choosing the place together

Offer two or three options, so the other person can turn one down without saying why.

Say what you need plainly: "Somewhere daytime, with seats, near a bus stop." Needs do not require reasons, and saying yours makes theirs easier to say.

Ask one open question: "Is there anything that would make a place easier or harder for you?" It covers access, noise, toilets and gender without asking which one applies.

Check before you suggest: step-free access, somewhere to sit, a toilet either of you can use without choosing a door.

Settle money early ("shall we each get our own?") and mention a soft end time: "I've got about an hour and a half." If it goes well you can stay; if not, the exit is built in.

Once you are sitting down, questions to ask on a first date has something for the pauses.
