How do I know if I'm trans?

Nobody else can answer it for you, and no quiz can either. Here is what tends to help.

If you are asking, it is worth taking seriously, and it is also worth knowing that asking does not commit you to anything. Plenty of people wonder about their gender for a while and land somewhere they did not expect, including exactly where they started. The question is not a symptom and it is not a verdict.

Why no quiz can tell you

Online quizzes promise an answer in ten questions. They cannot deliver one, because being trans is not a set of traits you either have or do not. Two trans people can have opposite childhoods, opposite tastes and opposite feelings about their bodies. A quiz can only reflect back what you put in, and you already knew that.

Questions people find more useful

If you could change how people refer to you tomorrow, with no cost and no explaining, what would you pick? Try imagining a name, a pronoun or a way of dressing in a quiet moment, and notice whether the feeling is relief, curiosity or nothing much.

Pay attention to gender euphoria, not only to discomfort. For many people the clearer signal is a moment that felt right, rather than a long list of what felt wrong.

And look at the question behind the question. Sometimes 'am I trans enough' really means 'am I allowed to want this', and that one has a simpler answer: yes.

You do not need certainty to explore

Trying a different name with one trusted friend, changing how you dress at home or reading what other trans people write about themselves are all reversible. You can explore at your own pace, stop, or come back later. Questioning is a place people live in for a while, and it is a legitimate one.

Some people describe realising they were trans as a slow 'oh'. The word egg is used, affectionately, for someone who has not noticed yet.

People to talk to

Other trans people are usually the most useful listeners, because they have been where you are. A local LGBTQ+ centre or an online community can be a low-pressure place to ask. If you want to talk to a professional, look for a therapist who says explicitly that they work with trans and questioning people. Exploring your gender does not require anyone's permission.

If you are dating while you work this out, dating while questioning your gender covers how much to share and when.
