Stem is a blend of [[stud|stud]] and [[femme|femme]]. It describes a lesbian whose expression sits between the two: some masculine traits, some feminine ones, without leaning fully into either.
It comes from Black and Latinx lesbian communities in the United States. Because its first half is stud, a word Black lesbians made for themselves, it inherits some of stud's racial specificity. We have not found a reliable date for its first use.
Exactly who it belongs to is where people disagree. The LGBTQIA+ Wiki describes it as specific to Black women, and some community voices argue that since stud is a Black term, stem must be too. A 2025 Pride.com explainer describes it as a word for Black and Latinx lesbians. PinkNews reported the same year that on TikTok it is also used by non-Black people of color.
The point every one of those sources shares is that stem is not a word for white lesbians.
The in-between space itself is open to everyone. If the word stem does not belong to you, [[futch|futch]], soft butch and chapstick lesbian describe the same ground, and Pride.com notes those can be used by lesbians of any ethnicity.
Stem is also not a lesser stud or a hesitant femme. It names its own place on the range.
