Masc lesbian
A lesbian whose gender expression leans masculine, with or without the weight of butch.
Masc is short for masculine, and a masc lesbian is a lesbian whose presentation leans that way: clothes, hair, the way someone carries themselves. It describes [[gender-expression|gender expression]], not gender.
It overlaps heavily with [[butch|butch]], and the difference is mostly weight. Butch is an identity with a long history in lesbian culture. Masc is closer to a description. One person quoted in a 2026 Star Observer piece put it neatly: butch feels like an identity, masc feels like an adjective, and that leaves more breathing room.
That breathing room is why many younger lesbians use it. The same piece describes some of them feeling they do not measure up to butch as a category, and finding masc gentler while they work out their expression.
Masc is the general word, and that matters because some of its neighbours are not general. [[stud|Stud]] comes from Black lesbian culture. Masculine of center was coined by the activist B. Cole in 2010 as an umbrella for masculine queer people of color, though its use has since widened.
Because it describes expression, it fits anyone whose expression fits: cis women, trans women, nonbinary lesbians. [[transmasc|Transmasc]] people also use masc about themselves, in a different sense, so the words around it on a profile usually tell you which is meant.
Masc does not mean wanting to be a man
Reading masculine presentation as a step toward transition insults masc lesbians and trans men at the same time. Someone's words can change over a life; that is theirs to work out, and the presentation does not predict it.
The other mistake is treating masc as a watered-down butch. It is a different kind of word, a description rather than a lineage, and plenty of people are comfortable with one and not the other.
