What do I do when a match misgenders me?

Correct it once, briefly. How they respond tells you what you need to know.

Being misgendered by someone you are getting to know stings in a particular way, because it lands exactly where you hoped to be seen. What matters most is not the first mistake. It is what happens after you correct it.

A slip or a pattern?

A slip is someone using the wrong pronoun once, accepting the correction and doing better. A pattern is misgendering that continues after you have corrected it, arguing about your pronouns, or using your old name. The first is ordinary learning. The second is a choice the other person is making.

What to say in the moment

Short and matter-of-fact works best: 'It's she, by the way.' 'I use they.' No apology and no explanation. Most people who are simply adjusting will say 'sorry, they' and move on, and that is the end of it.

If you are messaging, do the same in writing, or add your pronouns to your profile once so the question does not have to come up again.

If it happens again

Say it once more, clearly: 'I've mentioned my pronouns. It matters to me that you get them right.' Anyone interested in you as a person can manage that. If they cannot, or they start debating it, you have your answer.

When to end it

You are allowed to stop talking to someone who keeps misgendering you, without explaining why. If it comes with insults, deliberate use of your deadname or pressure, block and report: on a dating app that is harassment, not a difference of opinion. A match keeps asking invasive questions has more scripts for holding boundaries.

It is not your job to teach

You can explain pronouns if you want to, and some people enjoy it. You do not have to. The effort of getting it right belongs to the person who wants to date you.
