Butterfly is published by DM CUBED LTD and is rated 18+. It is built around dating trans people, and it says openly that it is not only for trans people: every gender and every sexuality is welcome, on the premise that every member is open to dating trans people.

It is also the app on this page that asks for the least personal information, and that says the most about how it limits what it keeps.

Who it is for

Anyone who is open to dating trans people. Butterfly is a trans-focused app rather than a trans-only one, and its listing even includes cisgender among the genders you can search for. The shared thing between members is openness to dating trans people, not being trans.

Verification

Butterfly uses a face-liveness check taken from a live video, which its terms say may be mandatory in certain jurisdictions and helps with age verification and fraud prevention. Other members see the verification image in a pixelated form, so a picture taken from your face appears even if your profile photos do not show it. Butterfly does not list verification as a paid feature.

Reporting and blocking

Profiles and private messages have reporting tools, and a single report or block button stops all communication with that person. The chat detects some transphobic slurs, and Butterfly says its moderation team removes profiles that ask for money. It publishes no response time, and it does not run background checks.

Privacy

This is where Butterfly stands out. Photos are optional and do not need to show your face, profiles use a first name only, your location is approximated before it is stored, the app asks for your age rather than your date of birth, and private messages are deleted automatically after 30 days. The only personal information tied to the account is your email address. Its terms also warn that other members may take screenshots.

What costs money

A free account can send a limited kind of message; a VIP subscription allows unlimited messaging. The listing names weekly, monthly, three-month and six-month plans, and on the US App Store on 18 September 2026 it listed VIP Access at $9.99, $29.99, $71.99, $107.99 and $143.99, without saying which price goes with which plan. The website also takes card and PayPal payments.

Platforms

iOS through the App Store, plus a website and a mobile website that use the same account. We found no Google Play listing, and Butterfly's own Android page still says the app will reach the Play Store in mid-2021 and points to the mobile website meanwhile. Its site now also recommends a second iOS app, GREED, which serves the same members.

Our read

Butterfly is the app to look at first if privacy mechanics are your priority: face-free photos, approximate location and expiring messages are real design decisions. Its open door is the trade-off: people who want to meet trans people are its intended audience, and whether that suits you is a question only you can answer.
